His father's words echoed his head as he stepped outside into the darkness. His veins pumped with adrenaline—not just from the bullets that had just whizzed past his head, but because of the woman he had blocked from those bullets.

He’d lost all sense of everything when she’d opened the door—forgot why he was standing on her doorstep, forgot his own name.
She’d sent a lightning bolt of emotion through him the moment they locked eyes.
She was, without question, the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen in his life.
He tugged at his collar. Despite the freezing temperatures, he was hot as hell.
A gust of wind swept across the porch as he scanned the yard. The sleet was still coming down, and he feared the roads would be impassable by morning, which wasn’t going to work because he had a shit ton of work to do on this mountain at first light.
Although he was only two hours into his first case as detective, he surprised himself at how easily he had stepped into the role. Like a comfortable old shoe. One dead body and another attempted murder were definitely going to make a hell of a case. But, he was ready. He was never one to run from a fight. He loved challenges; gravitated toward them. The bigger the challenge, the harder he worked and his gut told him that he was going to face his fair share of obstacles over the next few days.
That’s fine, he was ready.
