 About the Author

 A.K. Downing
A.K. Downing's young-adult novel, Into the Air, is a 2017 National Indie Excellence Award Finalist. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story follows the adventure of teenager Mia Bryn as she leaves the safety of her underground compound and tries to survive in a world no one has inhabited for more than a hundred years. Growing up in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Aimee spent her summers exploring the fields, woods, and orchards of her grandparents' farm. She was inspired by prepper shows and survivalist websites to create a story that weaves together the best aspects of young adult fiction – adventure, teenage angst, and a hint of romance. Aimee studied graphic design at Kent State University and currently works as a Creative Director. She enjoys history and camping and feels there is no better way to see the world than from the top of a horse.

What is your favorite book?
I love to read different genres, but YA is my favorite. I love the fast pace, action, and romance. I found a few new authors this year that I absolutely adore, and their stories now top my list of books to recommend: Sarah J. Mass – A Court of Mist and Fury; Maggie Stiefvater – The Raven Boys; and Cassandra Clare – City of Bones.

What is the most recent book you’ve read?
I just finished A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. Somehow I JUST discovered Maas and can’t get enough! I’m heading to the bookstore to buy A Court of Wings and Ruin.

Who is your author role-model?
I love the wit of Charlaine Harris, the epic storytelling of Diana Gabaldon, and the teenage angst of Cassandra Clare.

Where is your favorite place to write?
In the car. It’s when my head is clear and the dialogue flows. Ideas come to me all the time, though. I have notebooks, pieces of napkins, and pads of paper everywhere!

Do you base characters off of people in your life?
I’m sure all authors are inspired by the people around them – influenced by people they know or encounter. The stubborn, lumbering giant; the skate-board dude that makes you laugh; your first crush. And although my characters are fictitious, they are all very real to me. I know what they like, what bugs them, how they’ll react in different situations.

How do you read a book (i.e. cover to cover, read the last page first)?
I read cover to cover, although I skip ahead sometimes to make sure someone isn’t dead!

What is a writing goal you have?
To finish The Air Series before my daughter is in high school. Look for the Book 2 in Spring 2018!

If you could sum up your writing style in a word or phrase what would it be?
Into the Air doesn’t neatly fit into one category. It’s a post-apocalyptic story, but takes place a century after “the catastrophic event,” and focuses on a healing earth. It’s science-fiction in the sense that it takes place in a future world, but it doesn’t rely on new technology – the world has returned to bows and arrows. And it’s fantasy because my main character has “powers.” I’ve called it a YA Adventure, but it really encompasses the best of a few different genres.
